FAQS
What Would You Like to Know?
WHAT IS PLASTER?
The earliest evidence of plaster dates around 7,500 BC. These applications originated as mud used to cover stick and reed huts. Building off of these techniques and materials, comes what we still refer to this day as "Plaster" . A mixture of lime/gypsum, sand/aggregate, and water that sets, used to coat walls and ceilings.
WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PLASTER AND DRYWALL?
In today's building, both begin as plasterboard or sheetrock fastened onto the framing members. Joints and corners are then taped with either paper or fiberglass-mesh tape. Standard drywall consists of three coats of joint compound over the joints and fastener heads. Then the joint compound is sanded smooth. With plaster, the entire plasterboard is coated with a gypsum basecoat. After drying, a lime based finish coat is applied. The plaster is finished wet, and sanding is not required.
WHEN CAN I PAINT?
Different from the drywall system, plaster requires a cure time before paint can be applied. A minimum of two weeks with proper paint procedures is recommend.
